By the Grace of Allah, Khuddam and Atfal from Milton Keynes along with others from Hertfordshire region volunteered again this year at the Milton Keynes Marathon on Monday 2nd May 2016. Similar to last year, we had the blessed duty of distributing water to the runners. This was a large national event and in total there were over 6000 runners who took part in the marathon.
The day for us started early. We arrived at at the starting point which was the MK Dons stadium. Here we were briefed and told which water point we had responsibility for. This year, we were placed at the 23 mile point which was only 3 miles from the finish of the race. The first runner did not appear until around 11:30am but we spent the morning preparing the water bottles by taking them out of boxes and opening the caps so that the runners could quickly grab and drink.
The Atfal were a great hit on the day and worked very hard. Our youngest helper was 3 and half years old and many of the runners actually slowed down to specifically take their water bottles from him.
This was also great visibility for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association as we had banners on the site and many of he runners were very grateful and thanked us for volunteering.
At the end, the organisers were very thankful and grateful and commented on how good of a job we had done both this year and last year. They have already asked us to ensure that we volunteer again next year and Insha’Allah we will.
